Brief course description

For long-term success in school, business and life, learning HOW to think is far more important than learning WHAT to think.

Yet rather than serve as the core of any education worthy of a rational human being, we have relegated the teaching of logic, argument analysis and critical reasoning to specialty courses in universities that reach too few students, too late in their education.

In this course I share my growing understanding of these topics, with a focus on what is practically important and useful for developing as independent critical thinkers.

Brief course description

This course, taught by Professor N.T. Wright, is designed to take students into the realm of what a ‘worldview’ is. While most people think about ‘beliefs’ and ‘actions’, the real power behind each is the interplay that occurs within a person’s or society’s worldview. Understanding this worldview, particularly of the world of the New Testament, will assist students of the Bible in understanding what a New Testament text meant in its own context. Prof. Wright will describe the worldviews of the first century Romans, Jews, and Christians. He will then move through history to describe the Western worldview as a way of helping students discern where they fit and how to look at and through their own lenses in the 21st century. Prof. Wright will be joined by Prof. David Seemuth who will look at the U.S. worldview of the early 21st century as an outgrowth and reaction to the Western worldview that emerged from the Enlightenment period.

Brief course description

Over the years, I’ve taught many different kinds of classics courses to all kinds of different audiences. This class on Udemy is a distillation of the topics that students have responded to most positively and have most often asked about. We start with a look at the physical world of the Greeks, and then take up the Iliad of Homer. After that we look in detail how Herodotus presents the beginning of the great conflict between Greece and Persian, and finish up with an overview of the various Greek philosophers.

If you’re taking a class in Greek culture somewhere and need a little help, or if you are a motivated autodidact, I’m sure you’ll find these lectures a good step forward in your understanding and appreciation of the world of the Greeks.

Brief course description

This one-of-a-kind course by Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn is designed for anyone who wants to leave a mark on the world, make a difference and learn a few secrets about how to live a happier, healthier and more meaningful life. Along the way, you will learn about issues that afflict the world: Why some of us do not reach our potential, why some end up in poverty, how others are left out or brutalized because of their gender. You’ll learn about some of the people who have discovered ways to have strong impact around the world–and about how you can do so yourself.

You’ll also be inspired by social entrepreneurs who are making progress to help those struggling in life, whether because of poverty, disease, lack of education, or simply bad luck.

Beyond understanding the issues, though, you’ll discover how to make a difference in your own world and how you can reach out to lend a hand in your own community or halfway around the world. Helping people is harder than it looks, but with the tools gained from this course, you’ll be able to join the movement toward change. There is an emerging science of how to make a difference, and that’s the focus of this course.

Brief course description

In this course Simply Jesus, students will be immersed in the 1st Century A.D. context of the life, work, teachings, and actions of Jesus of Nazareth. The goal of the course is to look at the story of Jesus from the perspective of a historian. Too many times Jesus of Nazareth becomes interpreted as simply another ‘religious figure’ among many religious figures. But this so often eliminates the understanding of a man who lived in time and space at a critical time of history.

This course is meant for all audiences. No previous theological study is required or expected. In this way it is meant to give a basic understanding of Jesus as a figure in history primarily.

Prof. Wright will lecture on key biblical texts to walk the student through the different elements that constitute the story of Jesus. In addition, there will be quizzes and discussion questions to help the student think more intently about the material presented.

Brief course description

A fallacy is a poorly reasoned argument and those are all around us and even unintentionally come out of our own mouths sometimes!

Avoiding fallacies is a crucial skill, especially in the age of information we live in! The internet is full of debates. Full of arguments. And full of fallacies and tricks!

After this short course you will no longer have to look up what people are talking about – after this course you will be explaining and pointing out what has been wrongly argued and why.
